Marko Sakren Actors Workshops for 2008
NOTICE: My acting classes/workshops are hereby postponed until after June 2008
due to my next feature project, "Running 4 President," entering production.
By the way, please note that the rumors of Bette Midler being involved
in this movie are false. Her name was simply raised in discussion on
a couple of occasions regarding ideas for celebrity talent for the
packaging of the script, which was being delivered to an established
Hollywood EP for consideration late last year.
Due to complications (for an EP) of the writers' strike,
that consideration is on hold. Now, faced with the urgency of this project's timing
(i.e 2008 being an election year), I have decided to stop waiting for
Hollywood and do the darn thing myself here in Las Vegas
(using local resources entirely or as much as possible).
I am currently assembling an extended team of professionals
(had initial production meeting last night) and will be looking to
round out the cast with a ton of bit parts (principles are already cast).

For more information about this project, visit www.GlenbrookStudios.com
("Current Projects"). An official cast and crew list will be posted
to the Glenbrook Studios website later this month.
I am tremendously excited about this project, which has been in the making
(pre-production) for several years. It's now time to get it done
(I have been funding the development phase but can only afford to fund
a portion of production and post-production, therefore
I am seeking additional funding with a Feb 28 deadline for Phase II (production),
which is currently planned to start March 1 (or very soon after) and end May 31.
Phase III (post-production) will then start June 1 or soon after.
The production schedule will also be ready later this month.
Direct inquiries to msakren@glenbrookstudios.com.
An official press release will be forthcoming around Februrary 1, 2008.
Looking forward to working with local talent and resources!
Sincerely,
Marko Sakren

I just want to let you know that I am currently interviewing
people for a new BEGINNING CLASS with me to begin the middle
of January. If you have anyone you think I might be
interested in, please have them call me as soon as possible.
Class will probably meet on a Wednesday and Sunday for a
six week period. The previous class was extremely successful
and I am hoping that there will be others to follow with
as much success. However, it takes talented people and
whether someone has experience or not doesn't matter to me
as long as they have talent and are willing to work.
However, a lot of people say things but when it comes
right down to making that commitment, it's a different story.
Have them call as soon as possible.

We are going to be bringing various Casting Directors
here to the Impact office for Casting workshops in order
for them to do some casting of our Talent.
Most casting directors will be from LA.
They are currently casting various soap operas,
films, and TV shows. They will not see
(and we will not send) anyone that does not have
any acting experience or atleast have
taken some type of Acting classes, workshops,
or done a play in the past year.
You also will have to have a heashot
(or ZED card) and a resume.

So basically they are requesting
to not see anyone that doesn't know what they are doing
in front of a camera.

I am encouraging all of you aspiring actors
to take advantage of our upcoming Acting workshop(s)
to prepare you for the opportunity to be seen
by any casting directors.
I have heard way too many times from various casting directors
that so many of the talent in Las Vegas don't know what
they are doing when they audition.
Hence, the reason we are offering these types
of acting workshops.
I know Las Vegas has great talent,
but many need to hone their skills.
We want to help all of those serious
actors develop your skills.
So even if you don't take our workshops--you need to be
actively working on your craft through training, workshops,
plays etc...
so you will know what is expected of you the next time you audition.
Those actors that are already doing this realize the importance
of honing your skill and your talent is recognized. Thank you.

Sincerely,

I see these comments about the red Agency, yet there is never a name on it.
If you feel you have been lied to by our company then as one of the owners
I would love to know why.
You are so quick to throw accusations, yet by remaining anonymous
it has me question your motives.

We would all love to make Vegas a better place for Actors,
so please state your name and lets start with facts and address them.

Please send me any information, comments and or complaints.
My e-mail address is kendra@redagencylv.com

Jrothmp@aol.com wrote:
It all started this AM when I received this email from Remington Agency:
**ALERT** - I have had calls from several of my clients telling me that Dina,
formerly of Remington, and currently with Red, has called them
to inform them that Remington has been blackballed by Red…
and our clients will no longer get any auditions through Red.
She is telling my clients to sever ties with Remington,
and sign with Red to get the most work.
A few of you have been gullible enough to fall for this line and
have requested to be dropped from Remington.

I have contacted Dina several times and asked her to confirm
or deny these phone calls, and she will not make any comment.
She has been careful to put nothing in writing about this “blackballing,”
and if Red actually follows through on the threat, we will file a complaint
with SAG, as well as notifying her production clients of this unethical behavior.
Please do not fall for this line from Red. They are already being investigated by SAG,
from complaints by several local SAG agencies,
and I expect them to lose their SAG franchise in the next week or two.
Don’t be fooled by their smoke, and don’t believe anything Dina,
or any other person at RED tells you, until you confirm it with an outside source.
And always insist on getting it in writing!!!

You all need to be aware of the ongoing feud between Remington and Red,
specifically between myself and Kendra… it has gotten ugly,
and it will get uglier before it is finished.

Much of what we, at Remington and other SAG franchised agencies,
are trying to do in Las Vegas, is clean up our reputation in the industry.
We need to make Las Vegas appealing to production companies from LA to come here
and cast principal roles. When they come here, it needs to be a seamless transition,
with no visible differences in the way we do business here and they way they do it in LA.
This will make them feel more comfortable and “at home” and give Vegas a boost
in auditions and revenue for our actors.

But it is going to be a slow process… first, we have to clean up our act here,
among the agencies. Among these changes, we need to stop our in-fighting,
and cooperate and exchange information among ourselves.
We need to foster an environment of Exclusive agencies offering unique talent so that,
when a production company DOES come here to cast, they won’t get the same faces
from five different agencies. This looks totally unprofessional,
plus, if your headshot is sent in by numerous agencies,
IF the casting agent will see you at all, they will never offer you a dime over minimums,
because they can get the various agencies to bid you down to that.
To ensure that your signing an exclusive contract does not cost you auditions,
the agencies need to exchange casting data and encourage a competitive market.

Many agencies, such as Lenz, Elan and McCarty are very supportive of these ideas and changes,
and we have already begun sharing information and fostering a new and fresh approach
to the Las Vegas market, similar to LA. Other agencies refuse to get on-board with the changes…
they are used to making up the rules as they go along, and instead of encouraging competition,
they strive to eliminate their competitors by utilizing often devious and unethical practices.
They hate the changes we propose, and instead of embracing them as good for us all,
they are fighting, kicking and screaming, to continue their quest for monopoly…
which is ultimately the worst thing that can happen for our actor clients.
But we WILL make these changes, and the business WILL get better in Las Vegas for us all.

Next, we need to work on production companies and casting agents who,
as we all know, tend to cast all their principal roles in LA,
even when shooting is scheduled for Las Vegas.
Each of our agencies must take one company at a time, and educate them about the
availability of quality talent here in Las Vegas, and the reduction in cost,
to the production, of hiring local people to fill principal roles in their commercials and movies.

Last month, I met with one such producer, and convinced him to give our people a try,
instead of going to LA for talent. And when he opened the call for Las Vegas,
he said if he did not find the right talent, he would THEN go to LA to cast. Meanwhile,
I let the other agencies know about the auditions, and we sent out some top-notch talent.
In the end, he cast the entire commercial from local talent,
and was pleasantly surprised at the quality and depth of talent we have here in Las Vegas.

One company at a time, we will make this difference!
But it will take time, so please bear with us all as we go through this.
I have faith in you, and hope you will have faith in me, as well.

As to the battles we fight, I will try to keep you informed.
Often, you can help us, often you have to just sit and watch. But things are happening.
My “radical” ideas, as an agent, to get us in line with the LA way of doing business,
has just gotten me elected as President of the Nevada Coalition of Talent Agents,
beginning in January. Once in office,
I hope to use this platform to initiate even more far-reaching goals
and bring improvements throughout the State, and improve the image of Las Vegas in the industry.

And as to Red… know the facts before you leap.
Red is being investigated by the SAG agency department, and
I fully expect them to lose their franchise. According to Kendra,
as quoted in an article in the current issue of Call Back Magazine,
her primary goal is to make money, any way she can, in the entertainment business.
Their house, while busy and booming today, is much like the Gold Rush towns of the 1800’s…
it is built on a single foundation, the fact that she is married to an executive of R&R advertising,
who is channeling work to her. But when this foundation crumbles, and it will,
their house will come tumbling down. Either that, or they will join the rest of us
who are welcoming the changes and cooperating with a new era of talent agencies in Nevada.

Start with this.

Spell check. Hard to take you seriously when you cant even spell the name of the one you claim
to know so much about.

Hard to take you seriously when you are too afraid to leave any contact information.
You are sort of like a kid who lights a bag of crap and rings your doorbell and runs.

If you knew more about Dina or Red, you would know that you are far from accurate.
Red is one the most prestigious agencies in this town which would explain
why they are getting 50% of the work.

I dont work for Red but do know that your claims are like the National Inquirer.
Sounds good but not based on much.

Nice try. If I had to guess, Id say you work for a competitor who isnt booking
nearly what they should. At least I will admit, its a guess.

My general response is "Buyer Beware" unless you can personally vouch
for their credibility.
The entertainment world is full of scams and events that border on scams.
Las Vegas is a ripe target for these things as one writer in this chain suggested.
In California, Casting Showcases can charge money to be seen by casting directors,
but it is against the law for them to promise that participants
will get a contract out of it when the pay for the workshop.
On the bright side, it was a lesson for $40 not $1500.
My suggestion to all is look into the SAG Conservatory.
It's not designed to make money, but to keep the performing artists trained.
SAG members can get a whole season for $40 and non members can get a whole season for $50.
These are held every 1-2 months and are 4 hours long at a minimum.

The workshop ends with a SHOWCASE! Your on stage with a partner and a live audience.

The current showcase is planned for Dec.

You can attend the workshop even if you can't do the showcase, but those heading to the showcase would have priority I think..

Come join us ..... it's fun!

Heres the program:

THE INTUITIVE THEORY OF ACTING WORKSHOP
SEVEN READING SCENE DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM
By Darrel Wayne © 1991 revised 2006
The actors are encouraged to have two identical scene books so that they can have a duplicate for the other actor that they choose to do a scene with. The actors are free to choose any scene that they like subject to approval as to content, character type and length of scene.

The First reading; In the first reading the actors are to sit side by side on stage and read the scene without any acting at all. This reading is to discover what the writer had to say. And, If the scene needs to be edited because it is to long or if the actors are not right for the parts.

The second reading; The second reading is the searching reading where the actors are seeking the answers to where the scene takes place, what the relationship is between the two characters, what has transpired prior to the scene beginning, and what is each actors prime objective.

The third reading; The third reading is the listening/thinking reading. When the first actor has finished reading a passage from the scene, the second actor should take approximately the same amount of time digest what the first actor said as it did for them to say it. Then react to what has been digested with your next lines or actions.

The fourth reading; In the fourth reading each actor should be searching for who their character is and how they can become that character. What in there past has molded them to behave in the way that the writer intended? It is from this point on, that the director will be discussing the scene with the characters instead of the actors.

The fifth reading; In the fifth reading the actors are not required to be off book but are asked to improv the scene as close to the to the script as possible to make sure that they understand the story line. For the first time the actors are out of their chairs and moving around. After the scene is over the actors are required to sit side by side on stage and the other members of the workshop are encouraged to critique the work that was done. The performing actors are not allowed to respond to any of the comments regardless of how they feel about them. Nothing can be gained by rebuttal.

The actors should be off book by the next reading so it is suggested that they spend the following week walking the script. Reading the other actors lines to them selves and then react with their own lines or actions out loud.

The sixth reading; The sixth reading is the blocking reading where the director blocks the action. The actors should have pencils so that they can write down all of stage directions given. It is in this reading that the necessity for any prop’s or costumes are discussed. If there are still any unanswered questions, now is the time to put them out of the way.

The seventh reading; The seventh reading is a combination dress rehearsal and final scene evaluation. The actors should be performing as though it were opening night. If more work is required, the seventh reading can be repeated as many times as necessary to prepare it for an eventual showcase.

When I first got interested in acting I went to a couple of these and did not learn any more from them than I did from Joe Bernard who only charged a fraction of what they charge. Even Joe would have a chuckle when he heard about them charging this.

For now I will just stick with the SAG CONSERVATORY for any education or learning experiences

The people in power are the producers and they are not going to give any more than they want

Because labor has no voice in this country any more

Just like corporate executives they are only interested in there bottom line and bonus pay for bringing the movie under budget

Now it's my turn to give my input.

I have heard a lot of bad things and I don't know if they are personal things that happened or if they are hear-say. If it actually happened to some one we know then I would like to hear more.

If it's hear-say then do I want to hear more?

I was personally involved with Josh Sofer at New City Theatre from 2002 - 2004.

I never heard or saw anything underhanded for at least 2 years.

I left New City Theatre because I felt I learned all I could learn and as Harvey mentioned you could not work on outside projects unless they were for pay. It prohibited me from doing Community Theatre.

I feel I am still in good standing with Talent Services International and I hope that never changes.

This is a "for what it's worth" commentary.

See Dee Drenta' comments.

Keep that word "Empowered" in mind. It's a powerful word and could be used to address other issues such as:

What has to happen for actors to get other than "extra" work in movies?

Why don't "extras" get paid more? Who really controls that pay?

Do you remember the time MaryLee Lear pushed for higher pay for actors and what happened? Who really contrls the pay?

What will it take to change the pay scale?

Who is "empowered" to get those changes made?

I've heard the same...THIS is how we empower ourselves individually and collectively by NOT associating with people who have little or no integrity. Believe me, none of us needs the money this bad ~ unless you believe you do!

Sergio,
Do you not remember me telling you that this same person of whom Harvey speaks, invariably has all of the attractive women remove their clothing sometime during the filming of all of his movies. This man's films border on being soft porn and I have yet to hear of anyone benefiting from being in his films.
